This website was created alongside “Discovering Kilwa’s History”, a short book that tells the story of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara on the southern coast of Tanzania. The book was a response to requests for a book on the archaeology of the sites, from local residents and schools.

Kilwa and Songo Mnara are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Here you can access the book for download or reading online, contact us with comments or requests for copies, and find links to other resources on the history of the region.

We have made every effort to ensure that the book is as accessible as possible. Below, you can find the digital version of the book in both Kiswahili and English.

If you live on-site or in the Lindi region but have not received a copy, don't hesitate to get in touch with us via the feedback or contact form.

Have your say ...

This publication was created for and with the communities of Songo Mnara in response to requests for the delivery of a book on the archaeology of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara.

We would appreciate your feedback that will be used to inform and potentially create new books …
